House and Laboratory Manual
A Manual with directions and rules of use will be mailed to you with the key. Below is a brief overview of the manual. Please follow the complete manual once you arrive at the station.

What is provided:
- Bed linens
- Bath towels and wash cloths
- Dishes and cookware
- Paper towels and toilet paper
- Cleaning supplies, vacuum cleaner, brooms, mops, and ironing board
- Salt, pepper, coffee
- Trash bags
- Gas grill with tools
What you must provide:
- Food, including condiments
- Bags of ice. Freezers only have ice trays.
- Laboratory supplies (i.e., petri dishes, test tubes, trays)
Telephone/Internet:
Telephone: A telephone is located in the lab and the number is (865) 436-0796. Please try to bill all long distance calls to credit cards or other long distance services.
Internet: Each building is set up with wireless service. Each building also has a desktop computer connected to the Internet.
Emergency Services: Dial 911.
Kitchen Use:
- Basics (salt, pepper and coffee) are already in the houses. Please help yourself. If you notice anything running low, please feel free to replenish our supplies or drop us a note so that we can take care of that ourselves.
- Help yourself to anything in the cabinets or refrigerator, but please try to replenish what you use.
- Each kitchen has utensils and appliances available for use.
- There are no ice makers in the freezer sections, so please use the ice trays or bring bags of ice with you.
Cleaning Supplies:
Basic cleaning supplies are located under the kitchen sink or in the laundry room. Vacuum cleaner, brooms and mops are located in the laundry room.
Beds:
Two sets of sheets and pillows are provided for each bed.
Light Switch Locations:
You will find the flood light switch locations on the building map above and in the manual.
The security light on the chimney of the Laboratory /Shop is a photocell. If you should want to turn it off (i.e., star gazing), the switch is in the Laboratory/Shop directly below the light.
Laboratory:
- The Laboratory/Shop is equipped with a refrigerator/freezer, sink, and laundry facility.
- The benches have electricity with fluorescent and natural lighting.
- You will need to bring your own basic laboratory supplies.
- Please clean up after experiments and dispose of trash in the outside receptacle.
- Leave nothing in the refrigerator.
Iron:
An ironing board can be found in the hall closet next to the half bathroom (big house), but you should bring your own iron.
Tools & First Aid Kit:
A small toolbox and a first aid kit can be found in the laundry room on a shelf.
Temperatures:
Please make it as comfortable as you want while you are here. However, you cannot use the fireplaces. They have been permanently closed off. When you leave, please leave the AC on and set the temperature for 75 (in the winter, leave heat set at 68).
Keys:
It is possible to lock yourself out of the building because there are locks in the knob of all buildings; be careful. When you leave, lock the knob and the deadbolt.
Departure:
- Close all windows.
- Please strip the bed (s) you use and put on clean sheets and pillowcases.
- Please wash, dry, and fold bed and bath linens and return to appropriate places.
- A listing and the location of linens is provided in the main manual.
- Wash all dishes, pots and pans.
- Please close all blinds.
- If you have made a mess and need to sweep, mop or vacuum, take care of it before you leave.
- PLEASE do not leave any spoilable or perishable food in the refrigerator or cabinets upon your departure.
- Please carry out all garbage to the main trash receptacle behind the Laboratory/Shop.
- When you leave, please leave the AC on and set the temperature for 75 (in the winter, leave heat set at 68).
- When you leave, lock the knob and the deadbolt. Leave keys in the key drop box in the Laundry area or return them to University of Tennessee, Biology Service Facility, 125 Austin Peay Building, Knoxville, TN 37996-0910.
- Lock the gate.
NOTE: This is a Smoke Free Facility. Do not use the fireplaces.
