Facilities and Instrumentation
The department occupies more than 20,000 square feet of research space in Walters Life Sciences Building, with an additional 25,000 square feet of research and teaching laboratory space in the Science and Engineering Building and Hesler Biology Building. The department is well-equipped with research instrumentation, including a variety of UV, visible, and fluorescence spectrometers and microscopes, preparative and analytical high-speed and ultra high-speed centrifuges, gas and high performance liquid chromatography, preparative and analytic column chromatography and electrophoresis, densitometers, thermal cyclers for polymerase chain reactions, liquid scintillation spectrometers and gamma spectrometers, and computers. Investigators have terminal access to the University Computing Center's mainframe computing system.
In addition, the department participates in and helps to support a number of facilities that are shared by the other life science departments: a state-of-the-art electron microscope center, a molecular Biology Resources Facility that includes protein sequenators and peptide and DNA synthesizers, greenhouses, and a 10,000 square foot animal care facility (accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care). Two valuable and important components of our total operation are the Biology Business Office, which handles all departmental, grant and contract accounts, and the Biology Service Facility, which is staffed with expert personnel in the electronics, machine, and carpentry shops. Our facilities and instrumentation are further strengthened through our numerous interdepartmental collaborations.
