Jeff Morris, Microbiology Graduate Student, Receives SEPC's First "Best Student Presentation" Award at the annual meeting

Jeff Morris, Microbiology graduate student, received the "Best Presentation Award" at the annual Southeastern Phycological Colloquy. The annual Southeastern Phycological Colloquy (SEPC) is a regional meeting designed to bring together scientists from the southern United States involved in all aspects of algal research.  While many established names in the field attend, the primary focus of the meeting is on student research.

At the 29th annual SEPC meeting held in October 2007 at Dauphin Island Sea Labs near Mobile, Alabama, more than 20 students (graduate and undergraduate) and post-doctoral fellows gave presentations on a wide variety of topics in algal biology ranging from ecology and physiology to biotechnology and toxicology.  Jeff Morris, a graduate student in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Tennessee, presented a summary of current research in the Zinser laboratory on the role of oxidative stress in phytoplankton culture.  For this presentation Jeff was given the first-ever award for “Best Student Presentation” offered at a SEPC. Jeff’s award-winning presentation at SEPC has helped bring some deserved attention to phycological research at UTK and may result in fruitful collaborations with other researchers in the future.
